I told myself that once my Sony point and shoot could no longer shoot I'd buy a DSLR. Other than that I was happy.. Somehow it's been almost a year since my Sony has been broken and I'm still resorting to using it. Which would explain my lack of baking/cooking posts, since it's so hard to take a picture when the camera looks like this...

I found a way to use it when needed. I just take the button you push and tossed the spring and it somehow works if it's in the right spot. It takes about 1-2 minutes for the camera to actually take a picture. What stinks is this happened about a week after I had the battery latch fixed. Kind of odd how that broke out of nowhere. I take really good care of everything I own.. I mean I even have the sticker on my camera still. Looks like new, aside from the obvious..

So with baby on the way we're on a mission to get a DSLR. I had set my hopes on getting the Nikon D7000, or even the D90, but with lens costs it would be way out of our price range. So I'm setting my hopes a little smaller. I went to a local camera store in my area where they have extremely helpful staff and they highly recommend either I get the D5100 or the D7000 if I could splurge. Ideal lenses I would like are the 50mm f/1.4 and the 85mm 1.8 G.
Would love your opinions on cameras/lenses!! Do you own a DSLR?

I have a Canon Rebel T3i and so far, I love it.
ReplyDeleteNot being much of a picture taker before becoming a food blogger, I only had the cheapest point and shoot camera for my blog and man oh man, did it show. A friend bought a DSLR camera and it didn't perform to her expectations so she gave it to me. Yesssss, GAVE it to me. Even now, with my dreadful lack of natural light and non-existent knowledge of how to use the blessed thing, my pictures are already light-years better. The one I have is a Nikon D3000 and it came with a 18-55mm lens, which is all I have been using. Based on a ridiculous amount of research I did (hello, OCD.), I just purchased a book from Amazon called "Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition)" as it covers more about exposure, ISO, apertures, shutter speeds etc. than other ones I had seen. I can't wait to get it and start really using my camera! There are also several Digital Photography websites that send out tutorial emails and I am finding a lot of help in those as well. DSLR cameras take time and patience to master but I think the results are so worth it!! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI am researching them myself right now! There are so much to choose from it is crazy!!!
ReplyDeleteI have no advice, but one day I will get a new one!
ReplyDeleteAh, yes you will definately need a new camara with the new baby! Congratulations by the way. I love my camera. It's a Casio Exilm. It's so easy to use and it even takes movies. It's really compact, I love that it's not big and bulky.
ReplyDeleteWe have the NikonD5100 and LOVE it! It was well worth the money.
ReplyDeleteI have the Nikon D90, and I absolutely love it! I don't have a lot of photography knowledge, though I am learning, but having the right equipment does make a world of difference.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was researching, I was torn between the d3100 or 5100. I went for the 3100, for what I needed. It has seriously changed my life. I will say, with a sweet baby on the way, all the things the 5100 can do, I think would be a benefit for you:-) Have fun, Hugs, Terra
ReplyDeleteNo help here. I use my iPhone for all my picture taking. Besides, I'm a horrible photographer. :)
ReplyDeleteI still have a Canon point and shoot, but honestly, I love it and am pretty satisfied!
ReplyDeleteLiz, I'm going to also get another point and shoot - Canon is definitely the way to go with P&S, but I prefer Nikon for DSLR. Thank you all for your input so far!! I'm getting excited :)
ReplyDeletewe went from a Nikon D50 to a Sony Hybrid Piece of Shiz and are now loving the Canon T3. I'd go back to a Nikon but we got a great deal on the Canon. Should've never went with something else.
ReplyDeleteWe have a Canon Rebel, which I love. I have dropped, and broken, two lenses though, so I am looking for something a little more rugged myself.
ReplyDeleteI have a Canon 50D and LOVE it.
ReplyDeleteI have the Nikon D5100 and LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteGet the D5100. You'll love it! If you can shop at like a Costco or someplace where you can get those in a bundle and they come w/ a case, and two lenses. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about cameras. My mother-in-law is the camera person in the family.
ReplyDeleteI love my Canon Rebel - but I've never used anything else.
ReplyDeleteI have a Canon Rebel and love it :)
ReplyDeleteI desperately need a new camera, but I don't have the extra cash to splurge. I would love to find a good camera that is affordable and easy to use.
ReplyDeleteI just got the Nikon 3100 last week and I'm in love. Go for it!!
ReplyDeleteI am not a hi-tech camera person, but next time I need a camera, I really think I'm going to teach myself the real deal.
ReplyDeleteno I don't have anything that fancy. I own a canon. Can't wait to hear what you get
