A few weeks ago our little family went to visit our local animal shelter. The Bergen County Animal shelter which is our local shelter was actually one of the shelters that Tiffani Thiessen visited a week prior to us! Tiffani has joined Sergeant’s Pet Care Products and emBARK on Pet Health to educate families during responsible pet owners month and they are asking each and everyone to take a pledge. For each person who takes the pledge you donate a health kit to an animal awaiting their forever home. They are donating up to 5,000 kits and I hope they reach that goal!!
I spoke with Deborah who is the main gal who organizes and knows all at our shelter. She was kind enough to take time from her busy day and show us all the beautiful animals that need a home! Deborah told us a lot about the shelter. I was so impressed with the high adoption rates and how they take in EVERY animal that needs help.
I had asked her if it was a no-kill shelter and she said that’s a very confusing topic… they don’t kill an animal because they’re there too long, but if an animal comes in and is beyond any medical help the only humane thing to do is put that animal down.
While we were there we actually saw them bring in a few strays! We couldn’t take pictures because they didn’t know how the dog would react plus we couldn’t get too close – but it was very nice to see them doing this! We visited during non visiting hours and they were in the process of cleaning out the cages. Yup, they clean the area daily.
What hit me the hardest is when Deborah showed me a few pups.. some of them weren’t used to being in cages.. they were used to a nice warm home, a nice yard, and most of all a loving family.
this poor baby was really missing his family 🙁
When people can no longer keep their pets due to apartments/living arrangements their animals are welcome to the shelter – but so so heartbreaking. All the pets looked healthy thanks to the amazing care they’re receiving at the Bergen County Animal Shelter.
Once you get a pet it’s your duty to take care of them. They depend on you just as a child would and you can even consider them your pet babies! 🙂 The only reason I didn’t take a dog home is because our apartment doesn’t allow pets, and hubby has allergies. However, when the time comes Deborah said she’ll help us pick out the perfect one for our family – they always aim to find the perfect match!
We just loved how this kitty cat drank his water! Too precious!

Aww, I am in tears reading this post. I’d have a houseful of pets if I could lol. Right now we just have 2 cats (and I am horribly allergic but I just love them lol). Last year we lost our dog and a cat to cancer – that was horrible, its so hard when they are sick. Hubby & the kids are pushing for a new dog, but the only reason I am hesitant is because our 2 cats have some special needs/medical issues (nothing major thankfully but they still need a little extra care and vet attention) and I’m just not sure I’m ready to add in another pet (because you just NEVER know what will happen and honestly, after losing our two so close together and with our dog it was a very aggresive form of cancer – I’m a mess when our 2 cats have issues now .. just had an emergency trip to the vet today – thankfully the vet us awesome and the whole staff understands me LOL).

Aw, my daughter wanted a dog from the time she could talk. In fact her first word was “dog”! In October we finally moved to a place where we could have a dog. My daughter was 4 and a half when we got Tiny (a 7 yr old border collie). My 2 and a half yr old and now 5 yr old take such good care of her. We love having a dog

So sad!! On a lighter note – your daughter looks like your twin in that picture!
That Bald Chick
I love the picture where the pup is reaching up to you and Sweet Baby through the cage. So cute. And her expression to being told she couldn’t have a doggy? Presh!

I know! She really wanted one so we have Follow me Fred from Tiny Love for now ๐ I hate that our apartment won’t allow pets! Plus hubby has bad allergies and is allergic to most breeds. So thankful for our shelter once we buy a house they’re going to help us find one that’s good for allergies and perfect for baby ๐

One of my good friends families adopted a dog from a shelter when she was a young teen. He ended up being such a wonderful animal. They were so blessed by having him in their family. It is a great idea to adopt an animal from a shelter. The only time I would be concerned is if I had young children since you do not know the animals history and how they may react to certain situations.

I love her expression to hearing she couldn’t have a dog. I hope all those dogs and cats find homes soon.

My daughter and husband so want a dog. Unfortunately I’m allergic to them. They are cute, my daughter wants to be a vet.

Awww what a great story and I hope one day you’ll be able to get a dog. I pretty much had dogs all my life growing up and my 7 yr old is highly allergic to them so we won’t be able to have one or a cat ๐

Such sweet animals! I have a soft spot for all animals, but especially for cats. When we visit our local shelter, I always want to take them all home with me.

I have been wanting to go to our local shelter to see if there are any cute cats that need a new home. My cat has been missing over a couple months now and I miss having a cat.

Aww, such a sweet story. We fully support our local shelter and donate/visit to help out often. I took the pledge and will have my wife do so as well.
