Grated Avocado Toast is a complete breakfast and oh so good. Hard boiled egg grated over the top of mashed avocado and slices of fresh tomato.

Avocado toast is one of our breakfasts. You can add whatever you want to the top or just keep it simple with a sprinkle of salt. It was about 2016-2017 when avocado toast really became popular.

In 2016 people started making all sorts of avocado toast recipes. It was 2017 when Foodie Crush created the “grated egg avocado toast” and I was obsessed! I sometimes took the lazy way out and made it into avocado egg salad, but grated egg makes it so much more fun and prettier too. Now it has become a viral TikTok recipe! Of course, we have to share our version, we think it’s a must try recipe!

avocado toast with grated egg on a neutral colored plate and a hard boiled egg, avocado half, tomato half, piece of toast, and grater in background.

    Recipe ingredients

slice of sourdough toast, hard boiled egg, half of an avocado, half of a tomato, and a box grated on a table.

    Ingredient notes

    • Sourdough bread – Sourdough is our favorite bread when it comes to making avocado toast.
    • Avocados – Make sure they’re ripe. Avocados from Mexico are our goto.
    • Lime – We add this when we have it on hand, it adds a nice tang.
    • Spices – Flavor! We use granulated garlic, granulated onion, and salt and pepper to taste.
    • Hard Boiled Egg – It’s best to use hard boiled egg that is refrigerated for easier grating.
    • Tomato – Roma tomatoes are our go-to, but you could also use cherry or grape tomatoes.

    Recipe tips and variations

    • You can leave the seasonings and lime out if you like simple mashed avocado
    • Don’t like your avocado mashed? Try doing sliced avocado.
    • Eggs make this dish, but to make vegan you can also use shredded tofu with a little bit of black salt to give it that egg flavor.
    • Don’t have an avocado? You can also use guacamole!

    How to serve

We like to serve avocado toast with eggs so in a way this is a complete breakfast. We also pair with fresh fruit or smoothie.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I make this vegan?

To veganize the grated egg you can grate some tofu and season with a tiny bit of black salt (kala namak).

How do you easily grate the egg?

It’s best to use a refrigerated hard boiled egg as it will be firmer in texture.

What’s the best bread for avocado toast?

Sourdough is our preferred bread for avocado toast.

How do you easily peel hard boiled eggs?

For us it starts with making them easy to peel. We like to make steamed hard boiled eggs and they peel so easily.
