Easy homemade Chocolate Ice Cream swirled right into a cone or cup in your home? Yes, please! Read our full review of the GreenPan Frost Ice Cream and Frozen Treat Maker.

We’ve been on the hunt for the best ice cream maker, but not just any ice cream maker, one that could actually make that swirled styled ice cream in a cone like you’d get at the ice cream stand.
We tried the Ninja Swirl, which we loved, but it wasn’t easy to clean so we did return it.
Then I saw the GreenPan Frost Ice Cream and Frozen Treat Maker, and it does more than just ice cream and no hours to prep ahead. I purchased it right away before even looking too much into it.
We manage food allergies in our home so this is a game changer for us, but even for those who want to control the ingredients that you have in traditional ice cream or if you just want the connivence of ice cream in your kitchen whenever you want it!

Chocolate Ice Cream Ingredients
- Whole milk: Use full-fat Oatly for a dairy-free option.
- Heavy cream: Swap with Country Crock plant cream for a dairy-free version.
- Granulated sugar: We recommend superfine sugar as it dissolves more easily.
- Cocoa Powder: Don’t use dark, we recommend regular unsweetened and typically use Hershey brand.
- Instant Pudding Mix: We use chocolate instant pudding mix and just a little bit goes a long way!
How to Make Chocolate Ice Cream
Pour the whole milk, heavy cream, sugar, cocoa powder, and instant pudding dry mix into a blender. Blend until creamy. Place into a container until ready to use and refrigerate for up to 6 hours prior.
Add the chocolate ice cream mixture to the GreenPan Frost mixing bowl. Select soft serve and level 4.
Once the ice cream is ready the machine will beep and read “cool”.
You can now extrude your ice cream and enjoy as desired.
Recipe Tips and Notes
- Store any leftover ice cream in a freezer safe container.
- For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk and plant-based heavy cream.
- If the ice cream is too soft, you can level up, but you cannot level down on the Frost.
- Leave out the cocoa powder, add a teaspoon of vanilla and replace the instant chocolate pudding with instant vanilla pudding mix for vanilla ice cream.
How to clean the GreenPan Frost
Select the extrude option to remove all the ice cream.
Then while the extrude clean option is on add warm soapy water to the mixing bowl and allow it to clean.
Repeat once or up to two times if needed.
Remove all the removable parts and clean with warm soapy water.
Carefully wipe and clean any ice cream of the machine as well, paying attention to any spots that have residual ice cream left on it.
Comparison of the GreenPan Frost to the Ninja Swirl
While we loved the Ninja Swirl, we didn’t love the cleaning issues. You also need to make the ice cream mixtures in advance and it it’s a small amount. This can be a pro or con depending on your needs. It’s also much quieter than other machines.
We love the capacity, cleaning, and overall design and color options more on the GreenPan Frost. We also love that we can use it for slushies for entertaining. It’s a better machine overall, in our opinion.
The GreenPan Frost features a built in chiller, like the Ninja Slushi, but it’s two in one feature makes it a top competitor to the Swirl and the Slushi, an overall better bang for your buck.
Why you’ll love the GreenPan Frost
- No pre-freezing needed, built-in chiller
- Keeps frozen and cool for hours
- Soft-serve style swirl with Extrude function
- Family-sized 2-quart capacity

- 7 texture settings, from smooth to icy
- Ready in as little as 15 minutes
- Easy to use, just mix, pour, and go
- *Dishwasher-safe parts and Clean mode for easy cleanup
- Works with dairy or dairy-free ingredients
- Great for food allergy-friendly recipes
Why you may not love the GreenPan Frost
- Higher price point compared to basic ice cream makers
- Not ideal for single-serve portions
- While it states it’s dishwasher friendly, we highly recommend hand washing.
- Can be a bit drippy, contacting company about this
- We did get a defective drip tray (see video in recipe card) but will be contacting company about this.
These are non-issues for us, and we love it and will be keeping the GreenPan Frost.
