There’s something special about making cookies at home, being with family, enjoying spending time together, and of course the heavenly smell of sugar cookie aroma throughout the house. Growing up my mom would make refrigerated sugar cookie dough, but as soon as I was old enough I wanted to make sugar cookies from scratch. I love using real ingredients in my baked goods and choosing all the ingredients that go into a recipe.

I love when our homemade sugar cookies come out of the oven. I put them on a rack to cool, but I admit, it’s hard to wait. I love enjoying them while they’re still warm!

The best sugar cookie recipe should be soft, and slightly crunchy on the ends. This is truly a perfect sugar cookie recipe for Christmas Sugar Cookies or any other holiday sprinkles! We always make them for the holiday.

If you don’t want to use sprinkles on your sugar cookie dough you can bake them up and then decorate with sugar cookie icing or sugar cookie frosting.

This is such a simple sugar cookie recipe and we know you’ll love it just as much as we do!
We love serving our easy sugar cookies with some hot cocoa or cold milk. Another fun sprinkle is nonpareil sprinkles, there’s no wrong way to top our easy sugar cookies!


Easy Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 300 g
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup butter softened, 227 g
- 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar 250 g
- 1 large egg 50 g
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- Sprinkles or sugar cookie icing optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder until evenly combined.2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or a large bowl with a hand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and creamy.1 cup butter, 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
- Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until just combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.1 large egg, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix on low speed until the dough comes together and no dry flour remains.
- Scoop the dough using a cookie scoop. Roll in sprinkles or sugar if desired. Place on the prepared baking sheet and gently flatten each cookie slightly.Sprinkles or sugar cookie icing
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the centers are set.
- Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- Substitutions: Use vegan butter for dairy free, use King Arthur Flour for gluten free.
- Storage: Store cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
- Reheat: Microwave for 5 to 8 seconds to soften before serving.
