Make your own homemade Hanukkah Gelt for the Jewish holidays! You can make your gelt dairy free, nut free, and even add your own toppings!
Why make your own Hanukkah Gelt?
Many people suffer from food allergies and it can be hard to find an alternative locally. We always have Enjoy Life chocolate on hand for all of our baking so we invested in some Gelt molds to make our own gelt for Hanukkah.
You can find some brands online, like Amanda’s Own or NoWhey that have Hanukkah gelt that may be safe for your allergens. We did buy NoWhey this year, but we were disappointed it didn’t have any designs. Allergy friendly chocolate doesn’t play as nicely as regular chocolate so molding can be a bit tricky as you can see in our photos.
What is Hanukkah Gelt?
Hanukkah Gelt, Gelt, is chocolate coins that are given as gifts to children during Hanukkah. Gelt is the Yiddish word for money. The chocolate coins are individually covered in foil and then sold in mesh bags.

Ingredient notes
- Chocolate – It’s best to use good quality chocolate for making candy or even melting chocolates. With food allergies, there aren’t many options aside from our safe chocolate brands. Enjoy Life is one of the best tasting and most readily available allergy friendly chocolate brands.
How to make Hanukkah Gelt
Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl to nuke for 15-20 seconds and stir.
Repeat nuking 15-20 seconds and stirring until the chocolate is fully melted.
Pour the melted chocolate into a squeeze bottle, piping bag, Ziploc bag, or you can even just use a spoon.
Fill your preferred Hanukkah gelt molds with the chocolate. Take both ends and tap the mold onto a flat surface to remove any air bubbles.
Place the chocolate molds onto a sturdy surface, like a baking sheet, and let it set in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes.
Once the chocolate is set you can carefully remove it from the molds. Try not to touch the chocolate too much if at all possible.
Once removed, wrap the gelt in foil wrappers if desired for the full look of the Hanukkah gelt.
