What is a breakable chocolate heart?

It’s a heart shaped chocolate box that you smash open using a little wooden hammer or you can use a kitchen mallet as well. Once you break it open you’ll find goodies inside!

The best part of all is the chocolate heart is edible, it’s like an edible pinata of sorts. You can either make it one-sided or use two sides of a heart to make a chocolate heart smash box that is completely enclosed.

What do you put inside a breakable chocolate heart?

You can fill breakable chocolate hearts with anything from chocolate covered strawberries, cookies, chocolate truffles, chocolate peanut clusters, your favorite candies, or even small little gifts like friendship bracelets or a special note.

Why make your own chocolate smash heart?

    1. It’s fun to make and customize your own way.
    2. It’s fresh and you can control the quality.
    3. You can control the ingredients, so if you have a food allergy there’s zero concerns as long as your using your safe ingredients.
    4. You can make as many as you like and it’s much cheaper! A breakable chocolate heart costs about $30 for just one heart.
    5. Making it with the kids makes it even more memorable. Perfect to make on Valentine’s Day with your little Valentines.

    RECIPE INGREDIENT AND NOTES

    • White Chocolate – You can use your favorite white chocolate or even white chocolate candy melts in different colors. We use dairy free chocolate without an issue.
    • Semi-Sweet Chocolate – We use enjoy life chocolate to keep this allergy friendly but you could also use chocolate candy melts or your favorite chocolate chips.
    • Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies – This is our favorite filler! They’re so tiny and perfect!
    • Chocolate Covered Strawberries – This is optional, if you use chocolate covered strawberries you’ll need to keep your breakable chocolate heart refrigerated.
    • Favorite candies – We like using a mixture of allergy friendly candies.

    HOW TO MELT CHOCOLATE

    • How to melt chocolate in the microwave: Place the chocolate chips into a microwave-safe bowl. Place the bowl in the microwave and cook the chocolate for 15-20 seconds. Remove the bowl from the microwave and stir the chocolate, making sure to scrape the sides using a rubber spatula. Keep repeating the steps until the chocolate is completely melted. The chocolate may not look done, but once you stir it, the chocolate chips will melt more as you stir as the hotter pieces of chocolate will melt, the more solid ones. Do not overcook, as chocolate can burn quickly.
    • How to melt chocolate on the stovetop: Fill a small or medium-sized saucepan with about 2 inches of water and bring to a simmer. Place a heat-safe bowl onto the saucepan and make sure the bowl isn’t touching the water, and remove some water if needed. Place the chocolate into the bowl and keep mixing the chocolate until it’s melted.

If your heart pieces are uneven you’ll want to even them out by heating a large skillet on the stovetop on medium heat and then carefully place half of the chocolate heart halves onto the skillet open side down to make them even.

Fill the flattened side chocolate halves with your desired fillings if making a complete heart or you can just place your ingredients on a cutting board or inside a box and place the heart over top of the goodies.

If making a complete two-sided heart you need to seal the heart. To seal you can pipe some melted chocolate to the bottom heart half and then place the other chocolate heart half on top. Use your finger with a glove to seal the heart and wipe away any excess chocolate.

Now you can decorate the outside of your chocolate smash heart however you’d like.

Place your chocolate heart with a hammer inside a box or on a tray to gift or enjoy yourself.

    Recipe tips and variations

    • We recommend serving as soon as possible if using something that needs to be refrigerated. You can prep the chocolate heart halves in advance and then fill right before gifting or refrigerate for a little bit.

    Storage and reheating tips

    • Refrigerate: You’ll need to refrigerate your breakable chocolate heart if it’s filled with anything perisable like chocolate covered strawberries. Refrigerating chocolate can cause the chocolate to sweat or take on flavors so it may be best to fill right before gifting or enjoying.
    • Room temperature: If you used shelf stable products you can keep it in a container on the counter until you’re ready to gift it or enjoy.

How to use a breakable chocolate heart

You should serve your breakable chocolate heart with a small hammer. You’ll take the hammer and then smash the chocolate heart until it breaks open. You can enjoy the chocolate heart and the goodies inside.

    Frequently asked questions

Where do I buy a breakable chocolate heart mold?

We use this mold we bought from amazon. It comes with letter molds and wooden hammers.

    What is good allergy-friendly chocolate?

We use and recommend enjoy life chocolate brand.

Is it better to do one side or two sides?

This really comes down to personal preference. If you make something that has loose candy or something without wrappers it’s our preference to make it double-sided. If it was wrapped candy you could definitely do just one side.
